At CCSiT, we approach an IT strategy with the mindset of looking at the bigger picture. We establish an overarching IT solution that works for your business in the long-term, not only as technical problems arise. By looking at your goals for the next five years or so, we can provide a specialised solution for your business. We will implement an IT strategy that enables you to achieve your goals, while working within your plan and budget.
Why an IT Strategy is Important
The vast majority of businesses don’t have an IT strategy in place. They see every IT purchase simply as an expense they either can’t, or don’t want to afford. Yet with an established IT strategy, you can not only plan for these kinds of expenses, but proactively take control of your IT infrastructure to get the most bang for your buck.
The primary benefit to an IT Strategy is the overall reduction in service costs. This is a natural result of using good quality IT equipment, requiring less maintenance and therefore less break-fix type situations that can really hurt you over time.
In other words, if the right solution is purchased at the right time, IT shifts from a simple expense to an investment, and one that is actively saving you money over time.
The All-Too-Common Scenario
Sometimes the sums just don’t add up and being careful about where one choose to invest or spend your funds, may actually be in all the wrong places. A scenario we have seen with many clients that you may be familiar with, is putting free or cheap solutions in place that only appear to save them money.
One client installed a free alternative of Microsoft Office on their server because they didn’t want to spend the additional costs for Microsoft licensing. They repeatedly ran into issues using the software and we estimated approximately $61,288.80 per year was costing the company with ‘cheap’ software, slow infrastructure and an aging server.
The Ideal Scenario
A clear example of how important an IT strategy is to a business can be seen with a client with an IT strategy already in place, spending $5,000 per year consistently for three years on IT expenses. When the experienced staff member who had established the IT strategy with CCSiT left the company, his replacement no longer maintained the IT strategy, and their IT costs jumped to approximately $16,000. This was an increase in more than 300%.
Another client came to us with no IT strategy and had been spending on average $25,000 from between 2005 and 2010 on IT expenses. We mapped out an IT Strategy with the primary goal of stabilising their infrastructure at a cost of approximately $30,000. Whilst it was a high figure, with their solid IT strategy in place, their IT costs dropped to approximately $6,000 per year and their new infrastructure had paid for itself in less than two years.
The Lesson to Learn
As outlined above, the primary benefit of an IT strategy is to reduce overall the service costs, and it’s now easy to see where the value lays.
The other benefit from an IT strategy is peace of mind. While some companies may employ a dedicated on-site IT representative, most do not, and as a result this job falls either to the accounts person or the owner of the business. If you are the person in one of these roles, you know they require a certain amount of cautiousness and attention to detail, resulting in a reactionary approach to any IT management.
Alternatively, if there was a proactive IT strategy in place you would no longer have the stress of managing a system you don’t understand. Furthermore, CCSiT will provide you with regular revisions and assessments of your IT strategy, so you are confident your IT goals are being met, and can instead focus on your own business goals.
By implementing a strategy and putting plans in the place, the worst that can happen is that you don’t follow through with them and it costs you more money. An IT strategy really is a no-lose option.
